Army uniform? Hi! i was wondering, if you have The Eagle Award in the BSA can you wear it on your Army uniform, i hear you can and you can't from diffrent people. |
| NO, NO, NO. |
Is modern day RAF and army uniform significantly different to 1940s uniforms? I'm going to a 1940s event where I would like to dress as a wartime RAF or Army officer. Obviously, it's important to look the part, but full reproduction period uniforms are far too expensive for me (at least £200-300). Would I look really out of place if I went in modern uniform from a surplus store (would probably cost around £50)? Is it significantly different? |
Most critically during the Second World War service uniforms changed drastically, to reduce manufacturing times and save resources for the war effort thus landing you in a pickle. Some aspects of uniform has changed significantly while others have not. Uniform for the different services are different, with combinations numbering into the teens for different occasions. Finally in the Army each regiment still preserves many of their own traditions, whilst the RAF has less heritage and has one standard uniform.
Ceremonial uniforms (Full Dress and No. 1's) have practically not changed at all with the passing of time. These uniforms generally involve a lot of tailoring and are rather expensive. This is the only part of British Army uniform to have practically remained the same.
For the RAF No. 1 dress is the equivalent of the Army's No. 2 dress which is known as "Service Dress" and while remains unchanged in design from before the second world war, was not a regular piece of uniform between 1940 and 1960 for the Army.
Meanwhile if you were wishing to replicate the field and working dress of circa 1940 it would be somewhat different. Soldiers wore a defunct uniform called battle dress up to 1960, when it was replaced by a No 2. type uniform and also the combat dress type of uniform, known as DPM (disruptive pattern material).
All of the above is terribly simplified. As with anything in the military things are made unnecessarily complex. There are about 15 different forms of dress in the Army and another 15 or so forms of dress for the RAF, not to mention the sub categories of the uniform.
Now I think you can probably get away with find some 1960 vintage battle dress for British Army or up to 1973 vintage for the RAF. As far as I'm aware the RAF did not adopt No. 2 Service working dress until much later on. |
Why is the patch of the American flag army uniform sleeve appear to be backwards? I noticed my friends army uniform, the flag patch looked like the stars were not on the upper left side of the flag. |
| It goes back to the times when soldiers would actually carry flags into battle. When you carry the American flag, you carry it on your right side, so that is why the patch is on the right side. Now if you look at the flag from the right side as it is being carried in battle, it will appear as if it is backwards. But in reality, it is just because the guy carrying it is running forwards with it. So basically it appears backwards on the current uniform as a symbol of the US constantly moving forward |
How does one fit the Army Meritorious Unit Commendation on a Navy uniform ribbon rack? The Army unit awards have a large gold frame around them. This isn't a problem on the army uniform because all unit awards are on a second rack on the right hand side. I'm switching to the Navy. My Army Meritorious Unit Commendation with its gold frame should then be worn on the left side ribbon rack with all other awards however the gold frame makes it too large to fit other ribbons on the rows above or below it. |
Wow, that's a pickle. My answer isn't going to be so great, it's more of a suggestion.
I always took my ribbons to the NEX to rack up. They're amazing, I guess they've put together a million and a half of them because they get them together so they look immaculate. Every little doo hickey that went on certain awards was straight and secure. |
My husband left a pen in his army uniform and washed it. Ink exploded and got all over his ACUs!? Does anyone know an effective way to remove ink stains from an Army uniform. I've heard hairspray works; but, does that actually remove it? |
Try the following, it really works without using harsh solvents -
* Dip the stained area in a glass of milk.
The 'blue' ink will run into the milk turning it blue. You will need to replace with fresh milk when the solution becomes dark blue.
It worked great for my friend's white Lab Coat!!
Good luck! |
Can you wear your Army uniform when off duty? Im sorry if its a dumb question but, An example being if i were to take 10 days of leave could i wear my uniform around town? Im not in the Army yet but am enlisting in June. |
When you are in the Army, you are in the Army and subject to recall 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Consequently you certainly can wear your uniform on leave or on a pass. You must wear an appropriate uniform, i.e. Class As and not BDU, and you must conduct yourself at all times in a appropriate manner. There are certain circumstances under which you cannot wear your uniform:
> In connection with the furtherance of any political or commercial interest, or when engaged in off duty civilian employment.
> When participating in public speeches, interviews, picket lines, marches, rallies, or public demonstrations, except as authorized by competent authority.
> When attending any meeting or event that is a function of, or is sponsored by, an extremist organization.
> When wearing the uniform would bring discredit upon the Army.
> When specifically prohibited by Army regulations.
Apart from those circumstances you can wear your uniform all the time if you want to. You cannot be required to wear civilian clothes unless they are specifically prescribed, and then the Army must give you an allowance to purchase them. You have the option of wearing civilian clothes off duty but this is by your choice and cannot be required unless prescribed. |
Can I go paintballing with my US Army uniform? So I bought a US Army digital camo uniform off this website. It said the uniform is good for paintballing, hunting, work, etc. Wont the paint stick on the uniform and never come off? |
Paint from paintball comes off. Don't worry about it.
If they don't then... that's the fault of the person who makes those pallets. ._.
But no, don't worry. They come off with a good scrub. |
Does anybody know where I can find a photo of a guy in an oversized army uniform? I remember seeing a photo once of a toddler/smallboy/baby in an army uniform which was way too big for them, a sort of symbolic thing about boy soldiers. I have searched everywhere on-line but without sucess. It is for a book cover. Any ideas? |
I haven;t found what you were probably looking for, but if it meant to show the reader how displaced the guy is or how sad he looks, i have a few here.

Good luck with that book and all. |
What soaps are safe to use while cleaning the army uniform? I just bought a few fresh new army combat uniforms, (acu's) top and bottom. I do not want to use the wrong soap with optical brighteners because I'll be glowing in night vision (that's what the rumor is). Is there a specific brand I should use that is safe and won't ruin my acu's? |
ALL POWDERS are safe, I use Gain.
And only wash ACUs with other ACUs. Don't put anything else in there, make sure you turn the tops inside out as well. |
